I'm having a slow day at work and decided to review our memory work for Bible Study tonight. Fortunately I already knew the verse because it comes from my favorite chapter of the Bible. This chapter has been my favorite for as long as I can remember. It has been a comfort to me when I feel lost and my praise to the Lord for every day.
Psalm 139
O LORD, you have searched me and you know me.
You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar.
You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways.
Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely, O LORD.
You hem me in—behind and before; you have laid your hand upon me.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain.
Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?
If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.
If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea,
even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.
If I say, "Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me,"
even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you.
For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.
My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth,
your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.
How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them!
Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand. When I awake, I am still with you.
If only you would slay the wicked, O God! Away from me, you bloodthirsty men!
They speak of you with evil intent; your adversaries misuse your name.
Do I not hate those who hate you, O LORD, and abhor those who rise up against you?
I have nothing but hatred for them; I count them my enemies.
Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.
See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
For the last several months, I have been setting my alarm 30 minutes early and getting up to have my quiet time with the Lord in the morning before I get busy. It has been such a blessing to me to have that time and I truly believe it helps my attitude throughout the day to be one of joy and gratitude for all we have been given. Phil is usually still sleeping as I am reading and praying in the living room (he usually has his quiet time a little later as it doesn't take him quite as long to get ready) and I can see him sleeping from where I sit on the couch. Every morning during this time, I am overwhelmed by how much I love Phil. I thank the Lord for blessing me with a wonderful man to be my husband and truly my best friend.
It has been easy for me lately to wish the time away until we are in our house, but the past few weeks I have been trying to be thankful for each day and live each day for today and not wish time away because I know it is too precious. So Phil and I have been trying to embrace college apartment living for the next few months (no we are not joining in with our neighbors 3 a.m. parties!), but we have started going down to the pool in the evenings after the usual crowd has cleared out and swimming laps. It is great exercise and a nice end to the day (and something we won't be able to do when we move). Instead of focusing on where we will be in 10 months, I am trying to focus on today and making the most of our last few months in Auburn and be thankful for the time we have had here.
What are you thankful for?
