As you have probably realized from previous posts, one of our hobbies is trying to refinish furniture (a good hobby to have when you really can't afford to buy enough furniture to fill a house!) When my mom and I made a trip to see my grandmother (Gran) in GA, we went out to my great grandmothers house to pick up a piece of furniture for my aunt. I salvaged two pieces from her basement that were going to be thrown away because they were in such bad shape. The first piece we worked on, I have posted in a previous post. Here it is finished (for now at least.)
The second piece is a Hoosier cabinet. Dad and Phil and I repaired the structure of the top half, but the bottom half was a little more than we could really handle on our own so my grandad stepped in to help and replaced some of the rotten legs etc... Here are the before pictures:

Below is the finished cabinet. The original counter top was missing so Grandad put a wood top on it and we stained it to create a counter. We intended to keep it close to the original off white color, but after painting the top half, we decided we really didn't love the color and changed to this olive green. We also replaced all the hardware with the rubbed bronze. For the lower cabinet on the top part, we cut out the center because it was rotting and intend to put a piece of glass there so you can see through it, but right now it is just open. Here's how it turned out:
Here it is with all the doors closed - looks a little funny seeing the cream interior right now, but we will have glass over that soon. And no, this is not where it will go permanently - we have way too much furniture in our apartment right now (Amanda - I just saw that you requested a picture of our apartment - it's a scary sight!) that we are slowly transporting to our new home - I plan for it to go in the kitchen in our new house.
Thank you to Gran for letting us have this piece - it means so much to us to have something of Mammy's in our home and to Grandad and Dad for your help in repairing it! We are really excited about how it turned out!

Nice and I love the green color! So is all this furniture you are accumulating packed into your apartment in Auburn?? I think we need to see a blog post with some pictures of that!!!
You definitely don't want to see our apartment right now! It looks like we are moving but we aren't for another 9 months! We are trying to move as much to our house as possible especially before we start having company a lot during football season!
It's hard to believe it's the same piece we found in Mammy's earthen basement. Gran remembers Mammy sifting flour from the flour bin and mixing her biscuits on it, at least 60 years ago. Mammy had 12 children, all born in her bed at home near Athens, GA. She was a strong, hard-working woman who lived to be 96, and she loved us so much!
that anonymous comment was from mom!
